Members of the Humanitarian Society “Nezaboravak” visited the Home of “St. Petka” in the village Izvor near Paracin, for disabled people and delivered tangible help as household cleaning products and adult diapers in the value of about 50,000.00 dinars. The nuns of the monastery, who at the same time run the organization of this monastery and keep the Home of “St. Petka”, thanked for the charity and handed the Acknowledgement to our Society.
The Home of “St. Petka” is a unique institution of social welfare due to the permeation of state institutions and the Serbian Orthodox Church. Nuns from the monastery of Saint Petka, who belong to the sisterhood of monastery Ravanica , and the staff of the Centre of Social Work in Paracin are on the same task for more than 60 years. That example of mutual action of social workers and nuns has given very good results.
The Home of “St. Petka” is an organizational unit of the Centre of Social Work in Paracin which officially started working on 01.07.2003, on the basis of the Decision of the Government of the Republiuc of Serbia and to this date, this offi8ce has worked at the institution for accommodation of the mentally disabled in Kulina.
Historically speaking, refugee children have lived in a monastery of “St. Petka” Izvori since 1942. By the midst of that year, the abbess Jefinija with a part of the sisterhood, as they were expelled from the monastery Kovilj in Backa by Hungarians, came to the monastery Saint Petka in Izvor near Paracin. At that time, it became the nunnery by the decision of the Branicevo Bishop, Dr Benjamin, until liberation in 1945. Repairing the health situation in the country, the Ministry of Social Welfare founded in the monastery the Home for mentally disabled children which could accommodate thirty children, the very hardest cases. Initially, the residents were housed in the monastery guest house, and in 1966 the Home was built on the monastery estate.
Conscientious, loyal and by Christ love carried, nuns of the monastery St. Petka, belonging to the sisterhood of monastery Ravanica, have become the real strength of this Home.
